Types of Equipment Used in Hydroponic Gardening

Hydroponic gardening is a great way for people who don't have a yard, or live someplace with poor soil to enjoy fresh vegetable and plants. Sadly, many gardeners dismiss hydroponics because they think that it's complicated and requires a lot of equipment. The fact is that hydroponic gardening is simply the practice of gardening without soil and has been done for thousands of years. Growing plants on a hydroponic bed is simple, but not necessarily intuitive. If you're going to give this system a try, here's some of the equipment you'll need.

  • Grow bed - A hydroponic grow bed can be just about as simple, or complex as the gardener wants. Some advanced operations utilize complicated drip fed systems for delivering nutrients but that's a matter of choice. School kids have been making perfectly functional hydroponic grow beds from Styrofoam egg cartons for years.
  • Grow room - Yes, you can have a smaller hydroponic garden, but ideally you'll want to devote a whole room to the operation. That's because the heat and humidity generated by the grow boxes is not necessarily something you want lingering around your whole house.
  • LED grow lights - Indoor hydroponic operations require a bright light to substitute for the sun. In most cases, an LED light box can provide enough light to keep plants healthy.
  • Organic nutrients and fertilizers - In a traditional outdoor garden fertilizer and nutrients drain into the soil. But that's not really a possibility when you're gardening in your basement. Because disposing of chemical is not always the best thing to home plumbing systems, hydroponic gardeners are urged to use natural fertilizer and plant foods.
