Battered Women's Shelter: A center that provides help, refuge and support to women who have suffered emotional and/or physical abuse at the hands of a spouse, parent, partner, etc. Women's shelters provide crisis counseling and exit assistance for women who are under constant threat from their abusers.
Homeless Shelter: A place of temporary housing for individuals and families who have no other place of refuge. There are homeless shelters that cater to young people and offer job training, counseling and substance abuse rehabilitation.
Animal Shelter: An institution dedicated to the rescue and housing of abandoned, abused or neglected animals. Animal shelters are dedicated to providing a secure and safe habitat for dogs, cats and other pets in the hope that they will be adopted.
Emergency Shelter: A facility that houses people who are unable to remain in their homes due to a natural disaster such as earthquake, hurricane fire or flood.
Survival Shelter: An urban or wilderness refuge for people who seek to protect themselves from contamination of nuclear fallout, highly destructive natural disasters or the advent of war. Survival shelters can be underground bunkers or above ground structures that are resistant to trauma or attack.
