Types of Ice Skates

Ice skating is a popular winter pastime. There are several professional pursuits that involve gliding across ice, though. Following are common types of ice skates. Remember to wear a helmet and other appropriate safety supplies when participating in outdoor activities.

  • Figure Skates – Figure skates are made of stiff leather. This material allows for a certain level of flexibility but also provides ankle support. Figure skates have blades that are slightly longer than the boot and have a toe pick at the front. Toe picks are important accessories because they help the skater perform select jumps. For beginners, purchasing lightly used leather skates or vinyl ones is a more economical approach.
  • Ice Hockey Skates – Hockey skates are made of a more durable material than figure skates, typically plastic or synthetic leather. This gear experiences significantly harsher treatment than figure skates do. Since they are worn longer, hockey skates have a lot of padding inside. Hockey skates’ boots look similar to regular shoes but they are tilted forward. The blades are a little shorter than the boots. Goalie supplies vary from other ice hockey players’ skates.
  • Speed Skates – Also known as racing skates, this equipment is designed to maximize speed and forward mobility. The blades are flat and long. Certain styles of speed skates have a slap blade. When skating, the blade separates from the rear of the boot to contribute to forward thrust.
  • Touring Skates – Touring skate blades can be attached to virtually any foot apparel, though they are most commonly secured to hiking or ski boots. This gear is a useful tool for crossing inconsistent terrain.
  • Recreational Skates – This equipment is popular for leisure skating. Recreational skates look a lot like figure skates but they are made of cheaper materials and lack much of the padding.
