How to Clean a Pump-Action Shotgun

After so many shots and reloads after hunting, your gun will need a thorough cleaning. Some people turn to gunsmiths or other professionals for assistance. You don’t have to be a gunsmith to properly clean a firearm or hunting handgun. Accessories and supplies are readily available from name brand retailers. The following is a summary of how to clean a pump-action shotgun after bullets have been fired. Pistols. rifles and paintball guns will require different cleaning methods. Never clean a bullet-loaded firearm or weapon, because this is extremely unsafe.

  • Remove the barrel by moving the pump down and opening the breach. The forearm, particularly in the case of certain handgun and rifle models, should not be removed.
  • Run a cloth dampened with cleaning solvent down the length of the barrel a few times. Let the solvent sit for at least ten minutes. This will work to loosen the grime on the weapon.
  • Use a wire brush to scrub the inside of the barrel. After scrubbing, you will need a jag or a round hoop attachment for the ramrod. Jags are ideal accessories because they are sized for specific firearms. A clean cloth will need to be fed through the jag or hoop attachment. Run the clean cloth through the barrel several times.
  • To clean the receiver, follow the same basic steps as you did for the barrel. The receiver will need attention from a tool similar to a toothbrush.
  • Check the barrel to ensure all debris and solvent have been removed. Run an oiled cloth down the barrel to guard it from rust. Put your shotgun back together and wipe down the metal with a small amount of oil. Wipe down any wood with a clean cloth to remove any cleaning solvent or oil. Your gun and supplies are now ready for safe storage.
