Frequently Asked Questions About Post Offices
If you are curious about some of the services provided by United States Post Offices, then these answers to a few frequently asked questions might be helpful:

How is the postage rate determined?
The postage rate is determined by the weight, size and destination of the parcel or envelope. If you choose to purchase other services such as insurance or accelerated shipping, additional charges will be added. However, there is a relatively new service wherein a customer can purchase what is called Forever Flat Rate Packaging. This service allows a customer to ship a parcel anywhere in the domestic market for a prepaid flat rate. This is the only type of flat rate shipping option on the domestic market.

How do I apply for a Post Office Box?
Many people who are expanding their businesses, need faster mail delivery or want to keep their street address confidential use Post Office Boxes. In order to apply for a PO Box, you must fill out a form 1093 Application for a PO Box. If there are any persons you wish to have access to the PO Box, they must be listed on the form 1093. Bring the form along with two pieces of identification to the Post Office where you will keep your PO Box. Please note that there is a fee for keeping a PO Box, and it varies depending upon the size. Your postal representative will give you the breakdown of charges.

Why wasn't my mail delivered?
Specific mail delivery times cannot be guaranteed due to the fluctuating volume of mail. However, there are certain events that prevent mail delivery. For example, if hazardous weather conditions prevent the safe use of mail delivery vehicles, mail delivery will be delayed. Persons with loose animals on their premises that pose a threat to mail delivery persons will be notified that mail will be suspended until the animal is no longer a hazard. Mailbox blockage by a vehicle or debris will prevent delivery. If your mailbox is full and cannot accept further accumulation of mail, mail delivery will be suspended.
