How to Create a Coin Collection Dealers Will Covet

As gold prices climb, and stocks remain volatile, many people are looking for investment alternatives that don't involve Wall Street. One popular investment alternative is coin collecting. Rare coins tend to hold their value not matter what the economy is doing. But there's a lot more to coin collecting than simply amassing old currency. Coin dealers base their purchases on a complicated grading system that can be challenging for beginners to comprehend. But with some time, research and the right supplies, creating a coin collection that dealers cover is possible. Here's how to get that collection started.

  • When starting your collection remember that antique coins are not, by definition, valuable. The main factors that add value to a coin are condition and rarity. There's no shortage of Buffalo nickels floating around, but finding one in mint condition is something that makes dealers and appraiser perk up.
  • Be certain that you've got the proper supplies for storing and displaying your collection. Coin albums and polishing clothes are available at most hobby supply shops and should be used religiously. Improperly stored currency can lose value very quickly.
  • Understand the market and what coins dealers really want. Commemorative coins and collections are interesting and fun to own, but they have little resale value. Unless it's something extremely rare, the types of commemorative coin sets sold on television are not worth very much.
  • Remember that the prices listed in coin guides and other books are not rock solid. You may think that a certain coin is worth a certain amount, but if you can't find someone to pay our price it's worthless.
