How to Change Auto Clutch Fluid

Clutch fluid is essentially brake fluid and, like brake fluid, should be checked regularly and changed periodically. Following is a basic outline of how to change auto clutch fluid. Clutch fluid can damage paint, leather, and other materials. Be cautious when handling it. You do not want to mar a custom paint job or designer leather seats while completing this task.

  • Consult your owner’s manual. Your car’s designers have put all of your vehicle’s specifications in this book. It will be able to tell you where the bleeder valve, screw, and other pertinent parts to perform this task are located.
  • Check the fluid level. It is important to know your fluid levels before you begin changing the clutch fluid. You do not want to run the fluid level too low during replacement or air could get into the system.
  • Prepare for drainage. Locate the bleeder valve and connect a tube to it. The tube should run into a container so the clutch fluid does not go everywhere.
  • Work the clutch. Pump the clutch to create pressure in the clutch master cylinder. The master cylinder’s pressure will force old fluid out of and new fluid into the system. The clutch will need to be held down during the following step.
  • Work the bleeder valve. Open the bleeder screw and allow a slow stream of fluid to escape before tightening the screw again. Do not over tighten, but do not under tighten as this could let in air.
  • Check the fluid level. Release the clutch, check the fluid level, and add more fluid if necessary. Be sure to dispose the fluid properly later.
  • Repeat steps as necessary. Repeat the above steps until the escaping clutch fluid is not dingy anymore. When you are finished, replace the bleeder screw, top off your fluid, and remove the plastic drainage tube.
