Types of Leather Goods

Leather adds quality and craftsmanship to all types of goods, from boots to clothing and handbags. Because it is a natural material, each leather piece is unique and cannot be duplicated with mechanical processes. Retailers often offer full sets of matching luggage or accessories, such as hand bags and purses, offering shoppers a composed look. Consumers who enjoy the pleasant smell and smooth touch of leather have many types and levels of quality to choose from.

  • Lamb and Sheepskin - Clothing and apparel with a soft and supple texture is often composed of lambskin or sheepskin leather. Slippers, shoes, jackets and other accessories with this leather are available from retailers.
  • Cowhide - Motorcycle jackets, boots and other cowhide gear offer a more rugged look. This type of leather is tough and durable. Many belts, shoes, and wallets are also made of cowhide. Luggage sets made of cowhide last for a long time. A protective coating often makes these products water-proof.
  • Nubuck Leather - This type of leather is very fashionable and may compose goods like designer jackets, boots, purses and other accessories. It has a texture like velvet. Though it is often confused with suede, nubuck is actually brushed leather. It may be also called distressed leather.
  • Suede - Suede is simply the flesh side of leather, and has a soft feel. Products such as boots, high heels, hand bags, jackets and furniture are often made of suede.
  • Aniline Leather - Also called natural leather, aniline leather does not have the same protective coating on the outside that other types of leather offer. Many wallets and hand bags may be composed of aniline and may only be sprayed with a light wax. The drawback with aniline is that it can be easily scratched.
